Overcoming Dentist Fear

Many children are afraid to go to the dentist. It is an unfamiliar space and can be uncomfortable for young children. Taking your child to the dentist is mandatory to maintain proper oral hygiene. From your child's perspective, they are in a chair where they have no control and are surrounded by foreign tools and noises. To help decrease your child's anxiety level so that he or she is comfortable there are a few steps parents can take.

First off, bringing your child to the dentist at a young age is beneficial for their oral health and experience. Your child will meet the dentist, take a ride in the chair, and familiarize themselves with the office. At Woodbridge Kids Dentistry we recommend your child comes for their first visit within six months of their first tooth coming in or close to their first birthday.

Secondly, when you are talking to your child about attending the dentist use simple terms. Do not include too many details as you do not need to cause unnecessary stress or anxiety for your child.

Thirdly, be honest with your child and maintain a positive demeanor. You should also watch your vocabulary when discussing the dentist with your child. Avoiding words like pain, needles, and bleeding will scare children. At Woodbridge we also recommend that your child attend with an older brother or sister to show them how it's done. Having a role model there helps your child to know they can do it too!

At Woodbridge we are dedicated to providing a safe and comfortable atmosphere for your child. For more information regarding your child's first visit at Woodbridge Kids click here.

We do our absolute best to ensure that we can minimize the costs of adequate dental care for your children to the very best of our ability. By reducing the billing costs, this is a tremendous help for us in attempting to minimize any increases in fees. Due to this, the payment for services offered to our patients are expected when services is offered; we do however, often allow for other payment arrangements to be in place if they have been coordinated in advance.
We currently accept the follow methods of payment:
  • Cash

Insurance Coverage

Your insurance policy is a contract that is between you and your insurance company. Do keep in mind that you are responsible for making payment for your child's dental treatments. It is important to note that no insurance company is able to offer to cover all dental costs incurred, even the insurance companies that offer “full pay” plans. It is entirely your responsibility to pay any associated deductibles, co-insurance and balances not covered by your insurance.
As a general rule, we do not accept direct payment (also referred to as assignment) from your insurance provider. We are more than happy to work with you to maximize your insurance reimbursement for the procedures that are covered by your insurance policy. Kindly bring your insurance information with you on your child's consultation so that we can speedily process your reimbursement for you.
Government Assistance Programmes

Patients that are covered under Government Assistance Programs such as CINOT, Ontario Works, ODSP, Children’s Aid, etc., are only accepted by dentist referral. Please be sure that you bring all necessary current documentation with you to your dental appointment.
Your child’s oral health is of utmost importance to us. Our financial coordinator will be happy to assist you with any financial and payment concerns. If you have questions regarding your account, please contact us: http://www.woodbridgekids.com/contact/

Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry is an alternative method used to children to decrease fear and anxiety. This procedure is less frightening for children. Many dental problems can be treated using soft tissue laser procedures which is less painful and a more gentle treatment for young children. By using this technique, phobias are deterred, and anxiety levels lessen. The laser is more gentle, and less frightening for children.

Soft tissue laser treatments can be used to treat tongue tie conditions, lip tie, frenectomy, cold and canker sores, gingivectomy, biopsies, and expose unerupted teeth. Tongue tie restricts your child's tongue movement which can result in a lack of nutrition and issues with breast feeding. Lip tie can also interfere with breast feeding, and your baby can experience difficulty latching on. A frenectomy is the removal of the frenum in the mouth. There are two frena, lingual and maxillary labial. These frena are muscular connections between two tissues. The lingual frena connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. The maxillary labial frena joins the upper lip to the gums just above the upper two front teeth. These muscular obstructions can prevent movement of the tongue, and also cause nursing troubles.

Woodbridge Kids Dentistry is one of few dental offices that offer soft tissue laser treatments for your child. These treatments have a high success rate, and are safe. Soft tissue laser treatments are becoming increasingly popular as they are correlated with a fast healing time, and decreased post operative irritation and pain.

Importance of Dentistry for Children

The Canadian Dental Association highly encourages that children have a dental appointment within six months of their first baby tooth appearing or by the age of one. There are a number of factors which contribute to children being more susceptible to forming cavities. These factors include children 15 months or older using bottles, drinking high sugar liquids, or eating foods with a high sugar level. Poor dental health can lead to pain and long term problems for children. The pain associated with poor dental health can make it difficult for children to eat, which leads to a lack of nutrition in their diet, and poor growth. Poor dental health for children can also result in trouble sleeping, behaviour issues, and infections. Children who have cavities early on in their baby teeth are at a higher likelihood to be diagnosed with dental disease down the road.

Woodbridge Kids Dentistry specializes in pediatric dental care. All of our dentists and staff are specifically trained to concentrate on the needs of children, youth, and children who have special needs. Our team is caring and compassionate. Your Child's First Dentist Experience

Ensure your child's first dental visit is a good experience! A child should come to the dentist around their first birthday or 6 months after their first tooth appears. There will be a couple of forms to fill out prior to the appointment. The first visit will be short, and your child can even pick a show to watch, or bring their own while the dentist examines their mouth. The television is located directly above the dental chair so they can lay back and focus on the movie.

Having a parent nearby is encouraged, especially for the little ones who would feel uneasy without their parent in the room. Bring an older sibling or relative who can show your child how it's done! We want to make sure your child has a positive experience, so their first visit will include a ride in the chair, and counting of their teeth (checking for decay). We want your child leaving with a smile on their face, and coming back with a good attitude for their next appointment.

Feel free to address us with any comments, questions, or concerns at any time.
We look forward to meeting you!

Preventive Care for Your Child's Teeth

Preventative care for your child can keep cavities away! Oral health is important for your child's overall health.

Encourage your child to maintain proper dental hygiene by helping them form morning and evening routines. Your child should brush their teeth twice daily to remove plaque, bacteria, and food from their mouth.

You can assist your child to floss around the age of four and make it a part of their daily routine. This is an important part in keeping your child's gums healthy. Decreasing the amount of sugar intake your child has is also beneficial in maintaining good oral health, and preventing cavities.

Dental sealants are also a good idea, especially for molars. This coat will seal off grooves and prevent cavities in your child's teeth. Make sure your child has regular check ups with the dentist, around every six months is enough. It is important for your child to see a dentist regularly. Regular check ups will promote strong oral health, and catch a cavity early if one occurs.
